Colorado Flood Threat
[The following is a press release from the Colorado Water Conservation Board]
— Flooding is NOT expected today
Ridging aloft remains entrenched across Colorado leading to another day of above average temperatures. Morning soundings and satellite imagery show most of today’s moisture lies in the mid-levels and above with dry boundary layer conditions. This includes a PW reading of 0.66 inches at Grand Junction and observed dew points in the 30s to 40s°F across the state. Within modest westerly flow aloft, weak shortwave energy is generating some high-based clouds over northwestern Colorado and along the northern Front Range. This pocket of energy is likely to move slightly south of due east and generate increasing cloud cover through the late afternoon hours. Low instability is expected to evolve this afternoon thanks to daytime heating, so another afternoon of high-based shower and thunderstorm activity is anticipated. Isolated gusty outflows up to 50 mph are possible within thunderstorms that move off higher terrain to adjacent lower elevations. Outflow boundary interactions may set off isolated storms over lower elevations, otherwise virga with brief gusts is more likely away from higher terrain. Easterly storm motions of 15-25 mph are likely along and north of I-70 which likely limits rainfall durations to an hour or less. Weaker northwesterly flow aloft is noted over southern Colorado, so some anchoring storms are possible over the San Juan Mountains. With maximum rainfall amounts forecast to be an inch or less, no flooding threat has been issued.
Zone-Specific Forecasts:
Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Grand Valley, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains & San Luis Valley:
Scattered showers and widely scattered thunderstorms are likely over higher terrain. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible over nearby lower elevations. Within thunderstorms, isolated 30-minute/1-hour rain rates of 0.55/0.70 inches are possible. Over the San Juan Mountains, some anchoring is possible which may boost isolated 1–2-hour rainfall amounts to 1 inch. Flooding is NOT expected.
Prime time: Noon to Midnight
Front Range, Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains, Palmer Ridge, Southeast Mountains, Raton Ridge & Southeast Plains:
Scattered showers and widely scattered thunderstorms are likely over the Front Range. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible over the Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains, Palmer Ridge and Southeast Mountains. Within thunderstorms, isolated 30-minute/1-hour rain rates of 0.55/0.70 inches are possible. Flooding is NOT expected.
