Colorado Flood Threat
[The following is a press release from the Colorado Water Conservation Board]
— Flooding is NOT expected today
It’s going to be another beautiful late September day with well-above average temperatures returning to the state. The ridge continues to hold on, and should do so the rest of the weekend, although the ridge axis is being pushed slightly eastward today. That won’t influence Colorado’s overall weather though, and outside of some cloud cover and very light showers over the Southeast Mountains region, it’s a clear start to the day. With the stagnant pattern, moisture levels have only marginally changed over the last 24-hours. PW at Grand Junction this morning was up to 0.68 inches, so the slightly higher moisture is likely the source of the cloud cover and light showers further south this morning (along with some localized lift). On the contrary, northerly flow over the eastern Colorado has likely decreased available moisture over the area. There is no strong lifting mechanism again today, so only diurnally driven afternoon/evening showers are only expected to develop over the San Juan and Southeast Mountains, where the residual moisture is located. Perhaps there will also be minimal precipitation over the western Raton Ridge. Compared to yesterday, there should be a slight downtick in rainfall activity. Flooding is NOT expected.
Zone-Specific Forecasts:
Southeast Mountains, San Juan Mountains, Central Mountains, Raton Ridge & Front Range:
Another round of diurnally driven showers will be possible this afternoon through the evening thanks to the recycling of the residual moisture under the ridge. Best chance for rainfall will be over the San Juan and Southeast Mountains, and storms today should be more isolated. A shower or two will also be possible over the very southern Front Range/eastern Central Mountains and western Raton Ridge. Sort duration rainfall is anticipated with max 30-minute rainfall rates up to 0.25 inches forecast. There will also be plenty of virga so, flooding is NOT expected.
Noon to 9:00 P.M.
Palmer Ridge, Urban Corridor, Northeast Plains & Southeast Plains:
Warm afternoon temperatures are forecast again. Pockets over the Northeast and Southeast Plains could reach 90°F, and high 80s°F are forecast for the Urban Corridor/I-25 Corridor.
Northern Mountains, Southwest Slope, Grand Valley, Northwest Slope & San Luis Valley:
Another dry and warm day ahead. Afternoon high temperatures will reach in the upper 80s°F and reach 90°F in a couple of the valleys. 70s°F are forecast for the mountain valleys and SLV.
