Boulder County Parks and Open Space, Autumn Heritage Day and Vintage Baseball Game
[The following is a press release from Boulder County Parks and Open Space]
Join friends and family for some fresh air and an old-fashioned vintage baseball game in the picturesque setting of the historic Walker Ranch Homestead. Cheer on the local team, the Walker Ranchers, as they play their rival.
The game will be played using 19th-century rules. “Baseball” was two words back then. Those watching the game are called cranks, rooters, or bugs, and players are called ballists. A hurler pitches the ball to the behind, or catcher. No gloves or helmets are worn, and a cloth ball and cloth bases are used. Listen for the players’ nicknames and a bell ringing as players reach home plate.
Costumed volunteers will also share games and chores of the past for visitors to take part in. This hands-on, immersive event is sure to transport you to the 1800s.
Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for seating — and a picnic if you like!
When: October 6, 2024, noon–3:00 P.M.
Where: Walker Ranch Homestead, 7701 Flagstaff Rd, approx. seven miles west of Boulder.
Cost: Event is free and fun for all ages.

Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain will be closed most Mondays and Tuesdays from October 7, 2024, through January 28, 2024, for elk management through limited hunting.
The park will be open Wednesday through Sunday, or earlier if hunting activities end or are not scheduled. The park will also be open to the public:
October 21, 2024 – October 22, 2024
November 25, 2024, and November 26, 2024 (Thanksgiving week)
December 23, 2024, and December 24, 2024 (Christmas week)
January 20, 2024, and January 21, 2024 (Martin Luther King Jr. week)
Two hunters per week will be allowed to hunt this specific area only during this management period. Each hunter was selected through a random drawing of Colorado Parks and Wildlife licensed hunters who obtained the subunit antlerless license (hunt code E-F-020-L3-R) and declared interest in this program. All hunters will have passed a shooting proficiency test and attended an orientation.
This hunting program is solely and specifically permitted as a resource management tool. There is no cost to the hunter beyond their license and Boulder County does not receive any revenue. Recreational hunting at Ron Stewart Preserve at Rabbit Mountain, or any other open space property, is strictly prohibited.

Colorado Flood Threat
[The following is a press release from the Colorado Water Conservation Board]
— Flooding is NOT expected today
A broad ridge of high pressure aloft is building over the western U.S. today. There’s still some moisture aloft across Colorado leading to mainly thin high clouds passing overhead. A mid-level cloud deck is passing over the far eastern Plains, but with northerly flow aloft ushering in drier air, expect to see gradual clearing statewide as subsidence under the ridge increases while available moisture decreases. Grand Junction measured a PW value of 0.57 inches this morning, and a value near 0.45 inches is likely tomorrow morning. Temperatures are expected to be on the warm side of average for much of Colorado, but the Southeast Plains will be on the cool side thanks to a departing cold front. There’s no rain with this cold front, and a dry day is expected statewide.
Zone-Specific Forecasts:
Northwest Slope, Northern Mountains, Grand Valley, Central Mountains, Southwest Slope, San Juan Mountains & San Luis Valley:
Dry weather is expected. Mainly sunny today with a few high clouds passing through. High temperatures in the 70s to 80s°F over lower elevations with mid 60s°F in the higher mountain valleys. Trending clear tonight with calm to light and variable winds.
Front Range, Urban Corridor, Palmer Ridge, Southeast Mountains & Raton Ridge:
Dry weather is expected. Mainly sunny today with a few high clouds passing through. High temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s°F over lower elevations with mid 60s°F in the higher mountain valleys. Trending clear tonight with light northerly winds shifting to westerly.
Northeast Plains & Southeast Plains:
Dry weather is expected. Mid-level and high clouds this morning giving way to mainly sunny conditions. High temperatures in the mid-70s to lower 80s°F. Northerly winds at 10-20 mph becoming light westerly tonight and trending clear.
