Hearts and Horses, Expanding the Impact Nationwide: Riding in the Moment™
[The following is based on a press release.]
Since its launch in 2011, our Riding in the Moment™ program has enhanced the quality of life for adults with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory loss across Northern Colorado. What started as a program for a single long-term care facility has blossomed into an acclaimed, research-backed initiative, delivering the joy and therapeutic benefits of equine-assisted services to many individuals throughout our community.
Today, Riding in the Moment™ is poised for nationwide impact. Thanks to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers, groundbreaking research into the program's benefits, and the support of generous grants, therapeutic riding centers across the country are now implementing Riding in the Moment™ for themselves. The program’s growth owes much to researchers like Dr. Beth Fields and Dr. Rebecca Lassell, both of whom completed their dissertations in Occupation and Rehabilitation Science at Colorado State University on our Riding in the Moment™ program. Dr. Fields, now Principal Investigator of the Geriatric Health Services Research Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, saw the opportunity to bring Riding in the Moment™ to Wisconsin, and together with our Director of Program Innovation & Research Tamara Merritt, developed a curriculum and implementation manual, published in 2023.
Our partnership with the University of Wisconsin has laid the groundwork for therapeutic riding centers across the country to launch their own, standardized Riding in the Moment™ programs. Each center that implements the Riding in the Moment™ curriculum must sign a licensing agreement, follow our fidelity measures, participate in quarterly meetings, and contribute outcomes to the University of Wisconsin’s data repository, to ensure adherence to Riding in the Moment™'s high standards and evidence-based practices.
Recently, Dr. Fields and her team were awarded a $250,000 Community Impact Grant from the Wisconsin Partnership Program to launch Riding in the Moment™ at Three Gaits Therapeutic Horsemanship Center in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Centers like Three Gaits and BEAMING, Inc. in Neenah, Wisconsin, are now implementing our innovative program for themselves.
By expanding Riding in the Moment™, we’re reaching beyond Colorado to help make a life-changing difference for adults with dementia nationwide. To support this expansion, Tamara Merritt is currently developing an interactive master class for centers interested in Riding in the Moment™, funded in part by a recent grant from Johnson & Johnson.
With each step, Riding in the Moment™ brings us closer to a future where more families across the country can witness the joy, connection, and renewed sense of purpose that horses can bring to those facing memory loss. We are thrilled to embark on this journey and eager to see where the future of Riding in the Moment™ will lead us!
