Estes Park, CO., August 2024 Sales Tax Report

Cash Collections:
Sales taxes collected for August 2024 were $2,396,250, which is a decrease of 12.53% from taxes collected in August 2023, which totaled $2,739,594. The Town’s General Fund receives 80% of these amounts, or 4% of the 5% tax levied by the Town. The General Fund portion of the amounts received in 2024 and 2023, respectively, were $1,917,000 and $2,191,675. The remaining amounts are split between several purpose-restricted funds established in accordance with the terms of the additional 1% sales tax. The amounts used in the analysis below represent the General Fund portion of the sales tax. The following industry sectors had significant variances as summarized below.
The Automotive industry sector collections decreased 22.03%, or $4,950 in August 2024 versus August 2023. Delinquent returns were down $2,414 in 2024 from 2023. After backing out delinquencies, there was a decrease of $2,536 which appears to reflect a decrease in economic activity and includes possible late filers.
The Groceries industry sector collections decreased 15.48%, or $39,649, in August 2024 versus August 2023. Delinquent returns were slightly down by $139 in 2024 from 2023. After backing out delinquencies this industry experienced a decrease of $39,509 which appears to indicate a decrease in economic activity.
The Lodging industry sector collections for August 2024 reflected a decrease of 22.02%, or $159,286, from August 2023. Delinquency filings were significantly down by $62,788 in 2024, however much of this decrease includes state provided refunds to several filers in both years. After backing out delinquency filings, this industry experienced a decrease of $96,498 due to a decrease in economic activity and possible late filers for August 2024.
The Construction industry sector collections for August 2024 experienced a decrease of 29.23%, or $34,747, compared to August 2023. Delinquent filings were down $75 in 2024. After backing out delinquent filings, the town received $34,822 less in sales tax revenues in August 2024 versus August 2023, reflecting a decrease in economic activity and possible late filers for August 2024.
Taxable Sales:
The taxable sales schedules reflect the taxable sales activity in the month of the actual sale, regardless of when the sales taxes were remitted. Taxable sales reported for the month of August 2024 decreased 12% from the taxable sales reported for August 2023. Year-to-date taxable sales through August 2024 are down 4% compared to year-to-date taxable sales in August 2023.
