Town of Estes Park, CO., September 2024 Sales Tax Revenue Report

Cash Collections
Sales taxes collected for August 2024 were $2,958,203, which is an increase of 5.24% over taxes collected in September 2023, which totaled $2,810,817. The Town’s General Fund receives 80% of these amounts, or 4% of the 5% tax levied by the Town. The General Fund portion of the amounts received in 2024 and 2023, respectively, were $2,366,563 and $2,248,654. The remaining amounts are split between several purpose-restricted funds established in accordance with the terms of the additional 1% sales tax. The amounts used in the analysis below represent the General Fund portion of the sales tax. The following industry sectors had significant variances as summarized below.
The Automotive industry sector collections decreased 36.28%, or $9,254 in September 2024 versus September 2023. Delinquent returns were down $690 in 2024 from 2023. After backing out delinquencies, there was a decrease of $8,564 which appears to reflect a decrease in economic activity and includes possible late filers.
The Groceries industry sector collections increased 10.67%, or $20,781, in September 2024 over September 2023. Delinquent returns were down by $1,042 in 2024 from 2023. After backing out delinquencies this industry experienced an increase of $19,738 which appears to indicate an increase in economic activity and includes possible new filers that did not file returns in 2023.
The Retail industry sector collections for September 2024 decreased 7.91%, or 35,186, in September 2024 versus September 2023. Delinquent returns were higher by $7,490 in 2024, including returns filed by filers that did not file late returns in September 2023. However, after backing out delinquency filings, this industry experienced a decrease of approximately $27,696 which appears to indicate economic downturn and possible late filers.
The Lodging industry sector collections for September 2024 reflected an increase of 19.18%, or $153,168, over September 2023. Delinquency filings were significantly higher by $99,272 in 2024, and some of this increase includes late returns that were filed by several large filers. After backing out delinquency filings, this industry experienced an increase of $53,896 which appears to indicate an increase in economic activity and includes some possible new filers, that did not file returns in 2023.
Taxable Sales
The taxable sales schedules reflect the taxable sales activity in the month of the actual sale, regardless of when the sales taxes were remitted. Taxable sales reported for the month of September 2024 reflected approximately 0%, or no statistically significant change, from the taxable sales reported for September 2023. Year-to-date taxable sales through September 2024 are down 2% compared to year-to-date taxable sales in September 2023.
