From Curious Attraction to Icons, Longhorn Cattle are a Tradition at the Stock Show
[The following is based on a press release.]
The first longhorn appeared at the National Western Stock Show in 1907 during the 2nd annual show. Before the historic stadium arena, when the show was merely a tent on the hill, stock owners brought carloads of cows, horses, and other livestock to compete.
The first longhorn was reported as 'a curious looking steer' because it had horns that were over 3 feet wide. Noted as a side attraction in 1907, the longhorn cattle of today's Stock Show are renowned as icons as they lead the kick-off parade through Downtown Denver each year.
Since 2006, Gary Lake and Stan Searle, owners of Searle Ranch longhorn cattle, have driven a herd of cattle through the streets of Denver for the Stock Show parade. Longhorn cattle are an iconic breed known for their distinctive, wide-reaching horns that can span up to seven feet from tip to tip.
When they aren't at the Stock Show meeting adoring fans, these longhorns spend their year grazing the plains of Southern Colorado raising the future generations. Come meet these amazing animals at the Stock Show kick-off parade on January 9th and during the show January 11, 2025 – January 26, 2025.
